Twin Vines Vinho Verde was created to celebrate the birth of the family’s eighth generation—Antonio Maria Soares Franco’s twin daughters, Francisca and Matilde.

The idea for the wine first emerged while Antonio was completing his MBA in New York City in the early 2000s. At the time, José Maria da Fonseca wasn’t producing Vinho Verde, but Antonio frequently fielded questions about it from friends and colleagues. “So many of my American friends were asking about it,” he recalls. “It stayed in my mind for a few years, and when my twins were born in 2007, we started the project in their honor.” After all, he points out, Vinho Verde is “such a young wine, so full of energy and life, and so vibrant.” He believes this quality resonates with younger wine drinkers. “More and more, consumers want to connect with wines like this—lighter, lower in alcohol and calories.”
“Wine around the world is sometimes too formal, but Vinho Verde is totally the opposite; it doesn’t intimidate anyone. It’s totally adapted to the new generation of consumers.”
Everything began over six generations ago in 1834, with an act of irreverence and audacity. The story of the José Maria da Fonseca winemaking family spans nearly two centuries and seven generations. LEARN MORE
Vinho Verde, one of the oldest and largest wine regions in the world, takes its name from its lush landscape and the youthful, fresh character of its wines—not their color.
Officially established as a demarcated region on September 18, 1908, Vinho Verde is renowned for its white wines, though it also produces reds and rosés. Located in the rolling hills of the Minho district in Portugal’s rainy northwest, it is the largest Portuguese Demarcated Region and one of the largest in Europe.
The grapes in TWIN VINES Vinho Verde include:
- Loureiro: Named for its bay leaf (“laurel”) characteristics, this grape offers aromas of bay leaf, orange, and lime blossom, complemented by apple-peach flavors and well-balanced acidity.
- Fernão Pires: Known for zesty lemon, lime, and orange aromas, often with a hint of spice.
- Pedernã (also known as Arinto): Delivers gentle, refreshing flavors of apple, lime, and lemon, paired with naturally higher acidity.
